Castration: Its economic implications on swineherd profitability

A 16-week trial was conducted to investigate the effect of castration on profitability weaning finishing operation swine enterprise. Eighteen pigs were allotted into three treatments comprising male castrates (MC), intact males (IM) and females (IF), respectively. The exposed same management environmental conditions throughout duration trial. Total costs per treatment N67,583.14, N68, 256.34 167,583.14 for I.M, M.C I.F did not show any significant difference (P>0.001). gross margin however gave values (revenue) N85,268±40.62 group, N68,962±26.56 castrate group N69,588±35.38 with statistical differences (P<0.001) between I. M other two groups. 97.08 cycles or 32.35 years needed as pay back period M.C. group. 33.67 11.22 3.82 1.27 I.M. calculated return capital employed (ROCE) 1.03 %, 26.17% 2.97% M.C., I.M groups study revealed an enormous economic damage that could be inflicted by a practice pig also unlocked huge benefit accrue farmers when opposed their counterparts are used in this line production
